New phone (the honeymoon phase)

published on June 7th, 2008 . by jiffener

I got a new phone that so far is a better Pocket PC than my Dell Axim (with the possible exception of screen size), and a better phone device than I’ve ever had. The service is a mixed bag, however.

The phone is a Windows Mobile 6 device by HTC called the Touch, specifically the CDMA version available from Sprint.

So obviously the service is from Sprint, and the pricing is ridiculous (as in ridiculously LOW) thanks to the Sprint SERO program. Seriously, the pricing is better than anything else I have seen.

I have an unlimited data plan and usually I can get EVDO connection, although sometimes I do notice that I have dropped down to 1X.

The voice connection quality has been fair to terrible, strangely, even at home in the midst of the DFW metroplex. I don’t know if that is due to the phone needing some settings tweaked, the phone having a weak radio, interference from the crowded airwaves, or just Sprint voice service being crappy. I don’t think it’s the last one, because Patrick has the same plan, different phone, and has not had problems with his voice calls at the house.

So I actually originally typed most of this directly on my HTC Touch, with the Sprint SERO plan, the PCM on-screen touch keyboard, and the wmobile plugin for Wordpress.

It was awesome! Until I hit some button and accidentally went BACK a page. I knew right then I was about to say bad words. I was right. When I went FORWARD, naturally the little box where I had painstakingly finger-tapped several paragraphs of blog post was completely EMPTY. Darn it darn it darn it.

But other than that, it is quite spiffy and I am excited to have the ability to blog anywhere I have Sprint data service. (And battery power, which is the other shortcoming of the HTC Touch, at least when it only has the stock 1100 mAh battery.)
